My White Tiger

While reading recently about white tigers I made a discovery.  Probably everyone knew this but me….white tigers don’t occur naturally in the wild.  They are the product of inbreeding in captivity and have pale stripes; pink noses, ears and toes; and have beautiful crossed blue eyes.  I started comparing white tigers to my adopted feral cat and her kittens.  I suppose being feral there is a lot of inbreeding due to the small environments they have to live in.

AN EARLY SPRING, ANYONE?

So good ol’ Punxsutawny Phil saw his shadow and thus predicted 6 more weeks of winter.  The very same day General Beauregard Lee did not see his shadow in Georgia so they will enjoy an early spring.  Since Florida is closer to Georgia I hope that means an early spring for us–as long as we don’t end up with a looooong, hottttttt summer!  I like my temperatures to range between 70 and 80 degrees.

And so what ABOUT Florida anyway?  Do we have no famous (or even infamous groundhogs?)  And if we DID have one what would his/her name be?  Miami Miranda?

 Or perhaps Pensacola Pork Chop?

And maybe we would really rather have a flamingo prognosticator.  It would certainly cast a much more interesting shadow.

Speaking of shadows…  Since we had such contradictory responses from the more celebrated groundhogs, my class and I decided to have our own sighting.  We stood in front of the overhead projector and looked for our own shadows.  I believe everyone saw their shadows except for the 2 students who were afraid to look.  Soooo…. does that mean 6 more weeks of winter (well, 5 now that a week has already gone by) or an early spring because Georgia is getting one, or does it simply mean we look on the calendar and see that the first day of spring hasn’t changed one bit due to ground hog day?

I’m so sorry to be getting this blog in a week late, but it takes time to ponder the intricacies of the sciences.  From now on I’ll just leave that up to the local meteorologists to figure out.  THEY are welcome to consult with Punxsutawney Phil or Beau or Porkchop as much as they want.  Just get us through this winter as quickly as possible.

Just another day in paradise!

Yep! Gotta go now!

Yep! Gotta go now!

I've just gotta stop scaring off the other wildlife.

I have GOT to stop scaring off the other wildlife!

I’ve just got to say that I have enjoyed my pool much more since it has turned into a backyard habitat rather that a swimming pool.  I was all set to clean it out this spring, then we had the broken arm and eye surgeries to deal with, so it never got done.  We are visited on a regular basis by racoons, foxes, possums, turtles, frogs, birds, hawks, and homeless kitty cats.  The wild thing is that they all seem to get along with each other.  I guess since they all share a taste for dry cat food, which is nearly always available, thanks to Kitty King coming to the door for food when he knows a hungry animal is close by, they don’t need to look at each other with hungry eyes.  Actually, I’ve never seen the hawk eating cat food, but the other birds sure do.  It is just so cool how they all get along.
Now, for those who would judge me for making food available for wild animals, let me explain that they had acres to run in and live wild and free until an apartment complex was erected just behind my house.  There is a narrow strip of land and a fence separating us from the college students (a different kind of wild life–very noisy) and there is just not much habitat left for these lovely creatures.  Chad and I have really enjoyed the visits from these gorgeous neighbors.  Hopefully they don’t mind us taking their picture.
Knock, knock....

Knock, knock....

Why, it's merely the bullfrog who has made our algae-filled swimming pool his home.
